Washington State Board of Pharmacy says, "It's about me"

The Washington State Board of Pharmacy has it all backwards and continues to push on into the Big Muddy, even as they pass the waist-deep mark. The Board of Pharmacy passed a rule in 2007 requiring pharmacists to provide all medications (including levonorgestrel—aka “Plan B”—the one that is really at the heart of this dilemma) to patients presenting prescriptions and allowing pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions due to “conscience” only when another pharmacist is available on-site to fill the prescription. The rule never took effect because of legal action taken by some pharmacists who felt this violated their conscience rights.
They have it so, so backwards.
Bioethical principles are not about providers, they are about patients. When bioethicists discuss issues such as autonomy and justice, they're talking about these in the context of the patients we serve. If a pharmacist doesn't want to fill certain prescriptions based on personal beliefs, then where would it end? What about pain meds? Maybe a pharmacist thinks certain prescribers are too generous with opioids. Should they then be able to refuse to fill prescriptions for pain meds? How about SSRIs, and pharmacists who believe that SSRIs are overused? Can they just not fill the rx? Or Viagra. Maybe a pharmacist knows a patient is single and thinks that sexual activity outside of marriage is immoral. Can the pharmacist just say no?
