Augustine is really at his finest in these sorts of mediations on meaning and spiritual sharing. This is how we influence one another, by communicating. This can be done by words, as in Augustine's example, or by actions. In fact, we tend to view other persons' actions as communication even when the person is not conscious of communicating. We can ‘read into' someone's actions, and sometimes this can cause misunderstanding. Other times, by careful and sympathetic observation, we can to a deeper understanding of another person.
