Future human evolution: What we might look like 4m yrs from now?

May 24, 2009 by Jane Lane {{RIP M.J}} | Posted in Other - Cultures & Groups

Nobody wants to be the ugly duckling. Make the proceedures cheap and risk free enough and you'll inevitably give rise to a society of Barbie and Ken dolls.

I mean, look at what we do to ourselves today. We get botox injected into our faces, get nose jobs and plastic surgery done, get breast implants, liposuctions, get tans, cover our faces in layers of make up, buy rogaine and get hair transplants, buy viagra, buy steroids, buy into gym memberships and equipment, get tattoos, get piercings, buy nice clothes to impress other people with. We continue to develop things like excerise pills that give people the benefit of the excercise without the the exertion or effort, pills designed to grow muscles without the negative effects of steroids, stem cell treatments to grow bigger 'natural' breasts.

Of course, you'll also always have the people who won't want to conform and would use such advanced medical proceedures to declare individuality. The practical definition of humanity would be shattered as instead of the races homogenizing, you see them become even more distinct and different.

How funny would it be for us to never find alien species, but to effectively create them by altering ourselves out of the standard defintion of human? Already we have subcultures of people who proudly embrace the idea of not being something not traditionally human, it's just a matter of giving them better tools to accomplish their goals.

There's also the consideration of brain machine interfaces. I mean, if we're going to shoot out 4 million years and assume that we haven't been killed off, it's pretty safe to say that we would have perfected such a thing. Through videogames, we effectively live other lives in other dimensions, it's just that because we still use controllers and are separated by television screens and computer monitors, most people still keep the experience at an arm's length.

However, if somebody would really experience World of Warcraft or Gears of War or Mario as if they were actually there, as those characters, what would that mean for the definiton of reality?

Overall, I'd say that if humanity were to live for 4 million more years and not end up being killed off or sent into a permanent dark age by disaster or war, that we'd effectively end up as gods, able to get whatever we want, be whatever we want and experience whatever we want. We would know no desire because we would only whisper our wishes to the air and get them. An enviable position, yet at the same time, a pitiable one.

BTW: Was anyone else throughly freaked out by the "unihuman" LOL.

I do agree that the MSNBC one was a little too out there/SciFi ish,but the rest were pretty much too freaky for me to even put on here.

ONLY 4 years? It would take much longer than that.

edit- woops I didnt see that M. I guess we would look priminate. because the way global warming is going...

edit- HELL NO, when they say all races mix together are going to look like THAT, they lied. We are not going to have huge gigantic eyes, theyll be slanted but not alot. and our hair would be really loose curls.

becster- Right now you say their ugly, if those people look back at us from 4 million years ago theyll think were ugly.

It depends on where you live and how the climate changes.

If the climate were to remain the same then all Whites, Blacks, Asian and Hispanics in America will look like our present day Native Americans. All the Blacks in Europe will become Caucasian and all the Whites in Africa will become black.

I mean, when the Native Americans first came to the Americas, do you really think they looked like how they did in the present day?

You should watch the star trek voyager episode "Threshold." Humans evolve rapidly and turn into salamander looking creatures. http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Threshol d

I don't think we will be here 4 million years from now. It's a miracle we've lasted this long

O.o That Unihuman scared the heIl out of me! lol

Does that mean we are going to look like Aliens???

IF we are still here in 4m yrs we'll probably be pretty ugly. But the sun is going to novae and engulf the planet earth in 5m yrs, so hopefully their smarter then and looking for an escape plan.

We can't evolve into a society of Barbie and Ken dolls because Barbie and Ken dolls don't have genitalia! That would stop evolution in it's tracks!

That was really interesting to read :D

And, yes, the unihuman, along with the others,

were quite strange.

Interesting link.
I heard that scientists are doing some genetic engineering or something so that before you get pregnant, you can choose how your baby will look.
I dunno, something I heard through the grapevine.

Rose Point Coastal Explorer 2.0

I spent a lot of time at Rose Point ‘s booth at the Seattle Boat Show. So did Aaron; he shot a video product demo of the new Coastal Explorer 2.0 with Rose Point's Jeff Hummel. Look for that to appear here pretty soon.

In the meantime, though, I wanted to hit a few of the high points. Coastal Explorer 1.1 was already regarded as one of the top navigation software packages on any platform. Coastal Explorer 2.0 incorporates reliability and performance enhancements as well as cool new features, such as optional radar sensors and more radar display options.

I'm especially excited about one new feature in particular, which I'll discuss in detail tomorrow. Today, though, a quick run-down of some of the other features the Rose Point crew were demonstrating at the show.

Need to hit slack tide at Deception Pass? Gotta get in before the fuel dock closes? Not sure when to make those dinner reservations? The new Route Planning Timeline Tool combines your vessel's performance characteristics with tidal current predictions to make better cruising time estimates. It plots your route on a timeline, allowing you to move any waypoint to the time you want to arrive there. It then recalculates the rest of the waypoints in the route.
